WalkPittsburgh is here!

On Friday, May 10, 2013 the three Southwestern Pennsylvania Transportation Management Associations – Airport Corridor Transportation Association (ACTA), Oakland Transportation Management Association (OTMA) and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership TMA (PDP) –  jointly launched WalkPittsburgh.org, a web-based initiative which aims to reduce the region’s carbon footprint, encourage individuals to stay healthy, and promote safe walking as a commuting alternative.

The fun and easy program allows users to participate by visiting WalkPittsburgh.org to create a user name and password and choose the neighborhood in which they currently reside and/or work. Once registered, participants are able to keep track of steps taken by downloading a free app that turns the user’s iPhone or Android Smartphone into a pedometer which count steps, tracks progress, and uploads the information (identifying you only by neighborhood) to WalkPittsburgh.org. Each time a participant signs in to WalkPittsburgh.org they can see their own private walking profile page, view and compare the progress of surrounding neighborhoods, and see how many gallons of gas has been saved by walking.

Community volunteers will beautify and restore city blocks this spring with help from City departments and The Home Depot Foundation
(PITTSBURGH) April 23, 2013 Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced the 24 recipients who will receive funding through the fourth round of his servePGH initiative’s “Love Your Block” grant program – bringing the total number of projects to 64. From Garfield to Elliott, and Beltzhoover to Spring Garden, resident volunteers will partner with the City to transform blighted lots into community assets. Thanks to the generous support of The Home Depot Foundation, organizations will be awarded $1,000 to purchase supplies and equipment. Additionally, a special $2,000 prize will be given to the organization with the most impressive block transformation. Spring project implementation will begin this weekend in Highland Park and the South Side, and will continue through the end of June.

Jane Jacobs Walk is a series of free neighborhood walking, biking, and transit tours that help put people in touch with their environment and with the people that live in their community. Think of a Jane Jacobs Walk as a moving conversation: a way to engage community members with the people and places that make your city great, or perhaps a way to observe what works and what doesn’t. The focus of a Jane Jacobs Walk can be anything (architecture, local culture and history, city planning, local cuisine, nature, etc.) as long as it gets people walking, observing their surroundings, and connecting with each other.

Anyone can host a Jane Jacobs Walk. All of our events are led by volunteers, either individuals or organizations, who have a passion for the places in which they live, work, and play. If you have an idea for a walk that you would like to host in your city, lets us know and we’ll help you make it a reality. Most Jane Jacobs Walk events take place annually on the first weekend in May to coincide with Jane Jacobs’ birthday.  Jane Jacobs Walks can also be organized and led at any other time of the year by enthusiastic local people or organizations.

This Saturday, April 13th will be the first work day of the season in Frazier Farms; please join us from 10am-2pm to help clean out vegetable beds, move soil and do any other garden prep you see fit! Frazier Farms is on Frazier St. at the end of Dawson St.

 

Please feel free to bring any garden tools, plant cuttings or maybe even snacks to share!

 

Gardening is not a requirement to attend, if you would like to just come out and meet some of your neighbors you are more than welcome to!

 

PennDOT is seeking volunteers for this year’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania effort that runs through May 31.
The cleanup event is an annual effort sponsored by PennDOT, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, state Department of Environmental Protection and other partners. Groups involved in PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program, which involves volunteers cleaning roadsides year round, are also encouraged to participate in the cleanup.
“These cleanup programs play a huge role in keeping Pennsylvania beautiful through cleaner roadsides and communities,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “It’s my hope that more individuals get involved and join the thousands of dedicated volunteers that participate in these efforts year after year.”
Interested individuals can find a listing of cleanup events, resources for organizing a cleanup, and other information about the effort online at Great American Cleanup Of PA.
Groups interested in adopting a section of highway are encouraged to contact their local PennDOT County Maintenance office and ask for the AAH coordinator, or visit PennDOT District 11 (Allegheny County)
