Yard Debris Special Collection – Sat 5/16

  The Department of Public Works Bureau of Environmental Services will be collecting yard debris from all residents in a special curbside collection on Saturday, May 16, 2015.
The following yard waste resources will be accepted during collection:
  • Leaves
  • Branches (4 inch diameter or less)
  • Brush
  • Grass
Residents should place yard debris at curbside location and recycling/refuse pick up spots before 6am on May 16.

As a kick off to the Oakland For All initiative, the Ramp Crawl event also coincides with the National Council on Disability’s annual meeting in Pittsburgh.
We hope that you will join us for this fun, positive experience that is intended to provide an opportunity for everyone to become more engaged in the discussion about the importance of ensuring “Accessibility for All”.
Suggested donation of $20 goes toward providing businesses with technical assistance and the on-going advancement of the Oakland For All, Beyond Accessible initiative – a project that seeks to make Oakland a model community for accessibility.

Dog Wardens To Canvass Allegheny County Homes – Week Of April 20

GENERIC PUPPY DOG PET PETS PUPPIES DOGS Dog wardens will canvass homes in Allegheny County through the week of April 20 to ensure all dog owners have current licenses and rabies vaccinations for their dogs.
Under Pennsylvania law, all dogs three months or older must be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year.
The fee is $6.50 for each spayed or neutered dog and $8.50 for other dogs. Older adults and persons with disabilities may purchase a license for $4.50 for spayed or neutered dogs and $6.50 for others.

Violators can be cited with a maximum fine of $300 per violation plus court costs.

Join students and South Oakland residents build 5 new garden beds for the Frazier Farms community garden! These beds will increase the number of residents and students who are able to use a bed to grow food, increasing the community’s access to local and fresh produce!

City Of Pgh Plans For St Patrick’s Day Parade 3/14

City of Pittsburgh officials announced plans to ensure a safe, fun and clean atmosphere for tens of thousands of visitors expected in the city Saturday for St. Patrick’s Day parade festivities.
Motorists should expect delays and street closures Downtown after 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning from the parade staging area on Liberty Avenue from 11th Street east to 26th Street in the Strip District. The parade starts Downtown at 10 a.m. at Liberty Avenue and Grant Street, goes to the Boulevard of the Allies and finishes at a grandstand at Stanwix Street.
Streets should begin reopening by 1 p.m., but those attending other Downtown events — including the 1 p.m. Pittsburgh Penguins game at Consol Energy Center and the Home & Garden Show starting at 10 a.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center — should plan for delays or consider taking public transit.
Uniformed and bike patrol officers from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police will be enforcing the city’s prohibition against open containers of alcohol throughout the day.
As the parade ends the Department of Public Works will begin picking up barriers and trash and sweeping Downtown streets.
With the conclusion of the parade public safety personnel including city police and mounted Allegheny County police will shift their focus to the South Side. Police will begin clearing the South Side at 2 a.m.
At that time Public Works will also begin collecting barricades, picking up trash and street sweeping. Crews will use backpack blowers to blow sidewalk trash into the paths of street sweepers.

AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniv & Be My Neighbor Day 3/21 & 22

For the AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniversary, servePGH is partnering with The United Way of Allegheny County to support the 2nd annual Be My Neighbor Day. Please join us in celebrating the incredible legacy of AmeriCorps VISTA by serving hand in hand with our community members!
 
Be My Neighbor Day was started in part to honor Fred Rogers and provide a place where kids and families can learn about acts of kindness and participate in activities that benefit our community. 
 
This event will take place on March 21 & 22nd at several YMCAs across Allegheny County. Volunteers are needed to help lead activities for kids and families at local YMCAs to promote kindness and generosity. Families also have the opportunity to meet Daniel the Tiger.

CANCELLED – Monthly Adult Night At Frazier Fieldhouse – Sat 2/28 8pm

Updated: 2/28/15 – Most of the people who had planned to come have cancelled so we will not be having Adult Night Tonight.  Hopefully we be able to get things going better when the weather starts to warm up.

Our monthly adult get-togethers at the Frazier Fieldhouse adjacent to Dan Marino Field on Frazier St.  Any volunteers, donations of food or beverages is encouraged and welcome.

The Kids nights are going to be suspended during this cold weather.

Saturday Feb 28th is the adult get-together from 7pm-10pm.

Some entertainment is possible, but this event is more of an eat, meet and greet, maybe some card games so that neighbors can introduce themselves and discuss topics of interest and ideas for future events like like music, movies, games, etc.

This event is for ages 21 and older.

Due to the size of the building and limited people to run the event, we are limiting the number of adults to 30, so signing up beforehand is recommended.  Please include your name, address and contact number.

Donations of a covered dish, hors d’oeuvres, snacks and beverages are requested and welcome, but not mandatory.

Anyone that would like to share some of their favorite beer or wine for their neighbors to try is also welcome.  To avoid this becoming a “bar” night, we ask that you limit to one or two drinks total per person.

We reserve the right to ask anyone who is disruptive at any event to leave.

Drink For Pink Fundraiser At Peter’s Pub 2/25 5-7pm

The Oakland Business Improvement District, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the South Side Chamber of Commerce, with sponsorship from Dollar Bank,  have joined forces to raise funds for Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh by simultaneously hosting Drink for Pink events on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Each location is free and open to the public and will include Pittsburgh celebrity bartenders, a unique twist on the Drink for Pink theme.  All proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh.
