Water Test Results and Call to Action

One South Oakland residence's water recently tested at a 25 ppb for lead, well over the 15 parts per billion (ppb) considered a high level of lead based on government standards. That particular house is fairly newly constructed, so the source is likely the connection to the house or the main supply lines. We encourage everyone to have their water tested in South Oakland.

PWSA is currently mandated by DEP and EPA to replace seven percent of publicly-owned lead service lines per year. With a unanimous vote, City Council recently passed legislation that positions the city to help Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority customers replace private lead service lines when PWSA completes adjacent line work, but no funding yet.  If more people get their water tested in South Oakland, and the readings are similarly high, we as a neighborhood can appeal to Council President Kraus to make South Oakland a priority when the City plans any action.

The Residential Parking Permit Recertification meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2015 at Magee-Women's Hospital at 6:30pm.  They will mail out meeting notification letters along with a questionnaire after Christmas.   Surveys for changes to enforcement will take place after the meeting.  The meeting is where suggestions must be made so attending residents can have a discussion on the suggested changes.
City Council approved this week an extension to file real estate taxes early to receive the 2% discount. Instead of February 10, residents will now have until February 28 to file their city taxes early. The decision came as a result of tax bills being received by residents on January 31, which would have given them 10 days fewer to file early for the discount.

How do you follow up an event like the
Sept 6th South Oakland Community Day?

OAKCLIFFE – SOUTH OAKLAND NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY!
FREE FOOD FOR ALL! – FREE T-SHIRTS FOR STUDENTS!
When: Wednesday, September 10, 2014 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Where: CHS Community Center, 374 Lawn Street
All South Oakland residents are encouraged to attend, as well as students from all schools.

Our monthly adult get-togethers at the Frazier Fieldhouse adjacent to Dan Marino Field on Frazier St.  Any volunteers, donations of food or beverages, or even lending of movies is encouraged and welcome.

The Kids nights are going to be suspended for the summer, resuming in September.

Saturday August 30th is the adult get-together from 7pm-10pm.

Some entertainment is possible, but this event is more of an eat, meet and greet, maybe some card games so that neighbors can introduce themselves and discuss topics of interest and ideas for future events like like music, movies, games, etc.

This event is for ages 21 and older.

Due to the size of the building and limited people to run the event, we are limiting the number of adults to 30, so signing up beforehand is recommended.  Please include your name, address and contact number.

Donations of a covered dish, hors d’oeuvres, snacks and beverages are requested and welcome, but not mandatory.

Anyone that would like to share some of their favorite beer or wine for their neighbors to try is also welcome.  To avoid this becoming a “bar” night, we ask that you limit to one or two drinks total per person.

We reserve the right to ask anyone who is disruptive at any event to leave.

Please RSVP via SONG contact page, call or text SONG Phone#, or talk to Janet Sims in person.
