SCHOOL 2 CAREER ANNUAL COLLEGE FAIR

School 2 Career (s2c) has partnered with the United Way (APOST) Lights On Afterschool event to host the Annual College Fair on October 17, 2013 at the Consol Energy Center.

This has been an annual event for the s2c program since 2005. This year’s College Fair will be held from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Lights on Afterschool is a national awareness building day to recognize the importance of keeping the “lights on afterschool” and to bring support around the importance of afterschool programs. “Each October, 1 million Americans and thousands of communities nationwide celebrate Lights On Afterschool to shine a light on the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.”

Please attend the county-wide event at the CONSOL Energy Center on Thursday, October 17th from 1:00 – 6:30 pm.  The schedule of Events are as follows:
1:00 – 5:00 pm – School 2 Career – College Fair
3:30 – 5:30 pm – Time for Fun! Activities for all ages that include art, games, health and prizes.
5:00 – 5:30 pm – Rally for Afterschool
5:30 – 6:30 pm – Dinner, Activities & Exit

Thanks to all of you for making South Oakland Community Day at Dan Marino Field this past Saturday a huge success! We served over 300 dinners alone!
So, how do you follow up an event like South Oakland Community Day…
OAKCLIFFE – SOUTH OAKLAND NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY!
FREE FOOD FOR ALL! – FREE T-SHIRTS FOR STUDENTS!
When: Wednesday, September 11, 2013, 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Where: CHS Community Center, 374 Lawn Street
All South Oakland residents are encouraged to attend, as well as students from all schools.

We will update this post when we are able to sort through everything for some actual numbers, but we had well over 200 neighbors, students and friends attend our first collaborative Community Day with SONG and Oakcliffe Housing Club (OHC).

SWINBURNE STREET BRIDGE TO REOPEN

(PITTSBURGH) August 28, 2013   The City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works advises that Swinburne Bridge and Swinburne Street will reopen on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The bridge will remain weight retricted until further analysis can be made.

Oakland Planning & Development Corporation (OPDC) has put together a bag with some useful information about living in Oakland and being a “Good Neighbor”.   OPDC is seeking volunteers to commit to specific blocks and days for the door-knocking campaign. Specifically Saturdays August 24 and September 7.  They will provide lunch and supplies for volunteers. To get involved, please contact bnino@opdc.org or 412.621.7863 ext. 21.

Pitt will host community block parties on September 11th, 19th, and 26th in Oakcliffe, Central Oakland, North Oakland, respectively. OPDC will publish specific places and times as they confirm details. These parties are free and open to all neighbors.

Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group’s (PCRG) staff is heading out for casual ride throughout the City on Sunday, August 18 at 8AM, and we want you to come along! The ride will consist of trail, road, and an ambitious climb up Liberty Avenue towards Bloomfield. We won’t leave anyone behind!
