Upcoming Events In West Oakland At The Corner

Music Performance: Reggae Jam
Come enjoy Reggae music at The Corner on Saturday, January 18th @ 7pm. Truth and Rites will be jamming the evening away. Light refreshments served. This is a free event.

MLKing Jr. Art Project
Bring kids of all ages to participate in an interactive art project to commemorate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, January 20th from 12pm to 3pm. Refreshments and art supplies will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Film: “JUSTICE FOR ALL?” FILM SERIES
Saturday, Jan. 25 @ 3 p.m. How “just” is our country’s criminal justice system? What could a Christian response to inequities in the system look like? This three-part film and discussion series will provide opportunities to explore these and other issues. “Slavery by Another Name,” the first film in the series, will give this issue some historical context. and will be shown

KICO’s Oakland Adopt-A-Block Sat Jan 25, 10am-noon

OPDC’s Keep it Clean, Oakland program works with college groups each month who have “adopted blocks” and made commitments to do monthly clean-ups of these blocks throughout the year. If you see these students on your block, please introduce yourself!  Feel free to join in.  The next few tentative Saturday dates are

  • January 25th
  • February 8th and 25th
  • March 1st and 22nd
  • April 5th and 26th

Green Team Work On Bates St – Wed & Thur 11/20,21 2-5PM, No November Meeting

The Green Team is excited to be partnering with Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) to restore the Bates St hillside, they have two workdays next week to improve the hillside.

  • Wednesday, November 20: from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Meet at the corner of Bates St and the Blvd of the Allies.
  • Thursday, November 21: from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Meet at the corner of Bates St and the Blvd of the Allies.

 

WPC will provide tools and water; you only need to bring you energy and desire to beautify Oakland!  They will primarily be preparing/planting native trees on the hillside.

Because of the workday they will not be having the regular Green Team meeting. Keep sending them ideas for volunteer projects to beautify your street, your block, and your Oakland.

Tenant Rights Information Session Mon & Tue 11/18,19 6-7:30pm

Announcing an upcoming informational event to learn about the rights of a tenant and the rights of a landlord. There will be two sessions offered to help you to understand and take action against poor and unsafe living conditions.

  • Monday, November 18th from 6:00-7:30* at WPU, Ballroom
  • Tuesday, November 19th from 6:00-7:30* at WPU, Kurtzman Room

Refreshments will be provided and the event is free!

New City Council Dist 3 Satellite Office Grand Opening Thurs 11/14 Noon – 2PM

New hours and grand opening of our District 3 satellite office in Oakland! Donna Wielock and Arlene Trost will be staffing the office, located at People’s Oakland, every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 10 to 2, beginning with a grand opening open house on Thursday November 14th from noon to 2 PM.

Green Team Notices: Energy Audit, Daffodil Sale, Next Meeting Thur Nov 21

Find out what happens in a Home Energy Audit

Come find out how to save energy costs in your own home!  Energy audit is being conducted at the Brewton home, 232 Robinson Street, on Saturday November 9th.  Stop by between 10-12 to learn energy saving tips.  Coffee provided!

Imagine cheerful daffodils everywhere you look in Oakland!

Oakland Green Team has selected the DAFFODIL as the Oakland Flower, and we have bulbs to sell! They are $1 each or 12 for $10.  The particular variety is the “Arkle” a classic yellow trumpet daffodil that blooms in April and stands 18-20 inches tall.
