Christopher Columbus’ ships are sailing back into town.

Replicas of the Nina and Pinta, which drew crowds when they were docked on the North Shore in 2012 and 2009, will be returning to Pittsburgh on Sept. 30.

The ships, which are operated by the Columbus Foundation, will be docked at Station Square in the South Side and will be open to tours from Oct. 1 to 12, before leaving in the early morning of Oct. 13.

The Nina replica was built completely by hand, without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.”

Admission for self-guided tours of the ships is $8, $7 for seniors and $6 for students 5 to 16. Children 4 and younger get in for free. The ships will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. No reservations are necessary.

Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member should contact them directly

Forbes Digital Plaza
In 2014, the OBID will unveil the first installation project for Innovation Oakland, slated to be constructed in the open plaza at the corner of Forbes Avenue and South Bouquet Street in the heart of Oakland’s retail district. The site has been generously donated by the University of Pittsburgh and grant support for the project has been provided by UPMC, Pitt, Carlow University, the Duquesne Light Corporation, the Heinz Endowments and the Richard King Mellon Foundation. As the showpiece for Innovation Oakland, the Forbes Plaza project calls for the construction of a series of elements that have been designed to showcase what a 21st century space will look like.
