They will be kicking off the Oakland Community Land Trust at this year's event, which OPDC is launching to preserve home ownership and affordability in Oakland’s residential communities at a most critical time for our neighborhoods.

5/2/17 SONG Mtg Cancelled To Maximize Attendance At OGV Mtg

The meeting for the community to address concerns about Oakland Gateway Ventures' proposals for the Oakland Area including the properties in the 3400 block of Bates St ("the porches") will be Tuesday May 2 at 6pm at the Oakland Career Center at 294 Semple St. 
 
  That would normally coincide with the monthly SONG meeting, but given the importance of that meeting, we have decided to cancel the SONG meeting.

Representative Jake Wheatley’s office has arranged a meeting with PENNDOT and our elected officials (or their staff) re: Oakland Gateway Ventures plans for development of the properties in the 3400 block of Bates St (“the porches”).  Please plan to attend Tuesday May 2  (Thursday, April 27), at 6 pm at the Oakland Career Center community room at 294 Semple St.  Invite your neighbors to attend.

Alternate Proposal For Former Allman Cadillac Site

Attached are the initial alternative plans for the site of the former Allman Cadillac Dealership at the Blvd Of The Allies and Craft Pl.  Walnut Capital plans to purchase and remodel the existing building and build a second story parking deck in the back above the current parking area, as well as to redevelop the former Kentucky Fried Chicken/Enterprise Rental Car lot across the Blvd for additional parking.  They will be seeking several variances noted in the plans. If they do not get the variances, they will not purchase the building and the plans currently under appeal to build a 100 unit apartment building will proceed.

Cops & Kids Summer Camp 2017

Pittsburgh Police Youth Programs Unit 
 
The Cops & Kids Summer Camp represents a unique experience for Pittsburgh area youth to understand and explore all aspects of policing and public safety. 
 
For one week, campers will experience positive interactions with police officers. The curriculum is designed to enhance your child’s knowledge of public safety, as well as, reinforcing positive decision-making. 
 
The objective is to encourage campers to start early being responsible for their actions.
 
The goal of Cops & Kids is to help build self esteem, self awareness, and a better understanding what it takes to become a good citizen. 
 
The Camp Sessions will be held:
  • July 10-14 – Duquesne University
  • July 17-21 – CCAC, Allegheny Campus
  • August 7-11 – Chatham University

412 Food Rescue Challenge For Inclusive Innovation Wk 3/31-4/6

This year, the City of Pittsburgh is launching the 412 Food Rescue Challenge. They are teaming up with 412 Food Rescue to help save 15,000 pounds of healthy food during Inclusive Innovation Week.
The Mayor, City Council, The Department of Public Works and Public Safety are all on board to do food rescues. They want you to do a rescue, too!

FOP Caring Cops Easter Project Candy Drive – Deadline April 6

The Fraternal Order of Police Caring Cops Easter Project is up and running again.  They are collecting candy donations at Zone 4 station.  The donated candy will be collected to make up treat bags and those bags will be donated to children at Mercy Hospital, Children's Hospital and The Women's Shelter. 
 
This project has been successful thanks to the donations from police officers and members of the community.  For those of you who would like to donate candy there is a collection box at Zone 4 station at 5858 Northumberland St, 15217.  Or contact any of the Zone 4 Community Resource Officers at (412) 422-6559.

Savoy Restaurant’s Black History Community Leadership Award Event

Savoy Restaurant at 2623 Penn Avenue is hosting a Black History Month Community Leadership Awards Event Thursday, February 23nd from 5:00 – 7:00pm to honor the five Black Elected Officials of PBEOC – Rep. Jake Wheatley,  Rep. Ed Gainey, Councilman Lavelle, Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess, and County Councilman Dewitt Walton.

2017 Application Period Begins For 2nd “Pgh Lab” Program

Mayor William Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh Department of Innovation & Performance, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, the Housing Authority, and the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority today announced the opening application period for the second cycle of the PGH Lab program. 
 
PGH Lab is a program designed to connect local startup companies with the City of Pittsburgh to explore new ways to use technology and new services to make local government more efficient, transparent, sustainable and inclusive. The program gives the companies an opportunity to beta test their products and gain valuable feedback. During the pilot period startups will be connected with a “city champion” that will guide them through the 3- 4-month pilot period.

Beware Of Latest Phone Scam: “Can You Hear Me Now”

The link below is a news story for information about a recent telephone scam.  Please feel free to share with family, friends and members of your community groups or organizations. 
 
If you receive a phone call from someone asking “can you hear me,” hang up. You’re a potential victim in the latest scam circulating around the U.S. 
 
The police are now warning about the scheme, which also sparked warnings by Pennsylvania authorities late last year. The “can you hear me” con is actually a variation on earlier scams aimed at getting the victim to say the word “yes”, or "OK" or similar answer in a phone conversation. That affirmative response is recorded by the fraudster and used to authorize unwanted charges on a phone or utility bill or on a purloined credit card. 
 
The recommendation is to not answer unknown calls, and let them go to voicemail or an answering machine.  See the news report for more info and recommendations.
