Announcing an energy and cost saving program – called Grassroots Green Homes – that Conservation Consultants, Inc. are trying to get off the ground in the neighborhoods of Uptown and Oakland.  This program will provide free energy saving tools and tips to participants – to help residents save money on their electricity and heating bills and reduce their environmental impact.

They

are currently trying to get the word out about this program and generate interest in order to recruit community liaisons (Energy Coaches).  These Energy Coaches will help sign up participants for the program and be their point of contact throughout the year-long program.

They

aim to have ten Energy Coaches who will receive training, support materials, and a small stipend to help enable and encourage energy savings for the 500 participants in the Grassroots Green Homes program.  More information is in the attached flyer.

On Monday, October 26th two people were killed in a tragic crash at the wide and busy intersection of University Place, Allequippa St and Centre Ave – the border of the North Oakland and Middle Hill neighborhoods.

With three deaths on Oakland streets within four days, we are deeply saddened to lose more innocent lives to largely preventable crashes. Let us join together to honor the lives of the victims and advocate for safer streets for all who use them.

Please share this event widely.

Candlelight Vigil for Safer Streets.

Hosted by: Hill District Consensus Group , Oakland Planning and Development Corporation and Bike Pittsburgh

Thursday, Oct 29, 5 PM · Centre Ave at Allequippa Street – 4159 Centre Ave Pittsburgh PA

To encourage community participation in the Citywide Public Safety Meeting, taking place on Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30pm, the October 21 Oakwatch meeting has been cancelled. OPDC encourages community members to attend this important event to vocalize public safety concerns to Mayor Peduto and his public safety team.
Citywide Public Safety Meeting
Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30pm
The Pittsburgh Project
2801 North Charles Street
Pittsburgh 15214.

OPDC will help coordinate transportation for those who need a ride to the meeting, which will take place on Pittsburgh's North Side. If you need a ride or can provide a ride to an Oakland neighbor, please contact 412.621.7863 ext. 25 so they can match riders and drivers.

“Where do we go from here?” is the evening’s topic; the City of Pittsburgh invites you to learn to build collaborative strategies for community safety with new public safety programs and community-oriented initiatives.

Mayor William Peduto is the guest speaker, and light refreshments will be served at 6:30.

Other updates:

With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, OPDC reached out to public safety officers regarding plans for that weekend. Zone 4 is increasing their presence on the streets of Oakland that weekend, hiring additional officers who will concentrate on disruptive behavior and quality of life issues.

Please call 911 to report any disturbances as they are happening. If you need to report a non-emergency issue, please call 311 or go online to report the issue: http://www.pittsburghpa.gov/311/form. As always, we encourage you to let Oakwatch know when you have called 911 or 311 about an issue so they can help track responses on your behalf.
