 Best Cities for Foodies
Americans have always been really into their food, but in recent years, many have gotten more particular about their palate. Hence, the foodie.
These discerning diners are more likely to go for 100% grass-fed beef than a McDonald’s burger, and they’ll choose locally owned and locally sourced eateries over chain restaurants.
The desires and dining dollars of these epicures have helped take the culinary scene up a notch in many cities. And that means more great food for everyone, especially for those in San Francisco and Portland, which top NerdWallet’s list of the Best Cities for Foodies.

Summer meals are a lifeline for hungry children when school is out. But federal funding for these programs is set to expire September 30.
Roughly one in five children in our region live in poverty and rely on free school meals to keep from going hungry. What do they do when school is out?
Thanks to federal funding they can head to neighborhood summer meal sites for 1-3 meals and a snack every day.

Mayor William Peduto today celebrates the first day of the National Week of Making, drawing attention to Pittsburgh’s vibrant ecosystem of makers, and announcing new considerations in response to President Obama’s call-to-action to support a generation of Americans who are “makers of things not just consumers of things.”
Throughout the region, new tools – things like 3D printers, laser cutters, and advanced software design programs – are increasingly giving everyday citizens the ability to make just about anything. This renaissance in American manufacturing may have profound benefits for entrepreneurs, students, and citizens of all ages and backgrounds.
In response to the President’s call to action, Mayor Peduto is proud to draw attention to Pittsburgh’s vibrant community of makers and announce new considerations and commitments from local stakeholders to expand this work:
  • The Mayor’s Office will explore possibilities to provide better support to the larger maker community.
  • Event organizers will publicly release a call for makers to participate in the first-ever Maker Faire Pittsburgh
  • The Sprout Fund will premiere the Remake Learning Playbook
  • The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh will announce the ten schools chosen to participate in the pilot stage of the project, “Kickstarting Making in Schools.”
  • The Remake Learning Council will convene local maker stakeholders to advance the collective agenda for “Pittsburgh Makes.”
  • Maker leaders from the region will join colleagues from other major cities to form the American Maker Cities (AMC) North.

The City of Pittsburgh is expanding its free summer breakfast, lunch, and snack program for kids and teens to more than 125 locations across the city and will begin serving meals on Monday, June 15. GrubUp will continue year-round, adding out-of-school time meals to all 10 Citiparks sites this fall.

The ambitious new program, called GrubUp, aims to serve healthy meals to at least 7,640 young people daily through August 14, a 10% increase over last year’s average daily attendance of 6,946. GrubUp will offer meals at 20 additional sites — a 30% increase from 2014 — and also feature the GrupUp Food Truck that will visit 28 different parks, pools and playgrounds from June 23 to August 7, Tuesdays through Fridays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
